Set up Bunny Stream in 5 minutes

Video Memberships plays videos from your own Bunny Stream library. You need four values from Bunny; this guide shows where each one lives.

1. Create a Bunny account and a Stream library

  1. Sign up at bunny.net. New accounts get trial credit.
  2. In the left menu open Stream, click Add Video Library, give it a name (your store name is fine) and pick the regions closest to your customers.
  3. Upload a test video with Add Media. Encoding takes a minute or two; the status turns to Ready.

2. Turn on token authentication

  1. Open your library, then Security in the library menu.
  2. Switch on Embed view token authentication. This is what makes playback links expire.
  3. Leave Enable direct play off and Block direct url file access on. Both stop people from sharing raw file links.
  4. Copy the Token authentication key shown on the same page. You will paste it into the app.

If you open a playback link directly in a browser tab you will see a 403 page. That is expected: the link only works inside your store.

3. Copy the API values

  1. In the library menu open API.
  2. Copy the Video Library ID (a number), the API Key and the CDN hostname (looks like vz-xxxxxxxx-xxx.b-cdn.net).

Use the library API key from this page, not the account API key from your profile. The app only needs read access to your videos.

4. Connect the app

  1. In Shopify admin open Apps → Video Memberships → Settings.
  2. Paste the Library ID, API key, Token authentication key and CDN hostname. Leave the playback link lifetime at 3600 seconds unless you want shorter links.
  3. Click Test and save. The app checks the key against Bunny and shows how many videos it found. Keys are stored encrypted and never sent to the browser.

5. Create your first video product

  1. Open Video products → New video product, select the Shopify product customers will buy, tick the videos it unlocks and save.
  2. Add a link to /apps/video-library in your store menu or customer account page so members can find their library.
  3. Place a test order for that product (Orders → Create order → Mark as paid) with a customer who has a storefront login, then sign in as that customer and open the library.

Optional: casting and TV apps

In the Bunny library open Player and switch on Chromecast and AirPlay. Members can then cast any video from their phone to a TV today. Dedicated Samsung and LG TV apps are coming. To use them, under Security switch on CDN token authentication and switch off Block direct url file access (TV players send no referrer, so that setting would block them; the signed, expiring links still protect your videos).

What Bunny costs

Storage is about $0.01 per GB per month and streaming about $0.005 per GB in most regions. A 20-video course of 1080p lessons is usually 5 to 10 GB stored, so a few dollars per month plus streaming. Bunny bills you directly; the app never touches that bill.
